There is a wealth of information and so many great ideas for homeschooling!
Here at Reach Your Peake tutoring, we believe summer should be a springboard for continued learning, not a learning cliff. Here are some tips to keep your child's mind sharp and their curiosity ignited throughout the summer months!
Make Learning Fun and Engaging:
Themed Learning Adventures: Pick a topic your child enjoys – dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, space exploration – and build learning activities around it. Read books, conduct science experiments, create art projects, or even plan a "living history" day in your backyard.
Gamify Learning: Turn flashcards into a board game, practice math facts with dice rolls, or create a scavenger hunt with clues that involve reading comprehension or historical facts.
Educational Apps & Websites: Supplement your curriculum with age-appropriate educational apps and websites that offer interactive games, quizzes, and learning modules. Here are some great options:
Khan Academy: Offers free, high-quality lessons in math, science, social studies, and more, for all grade levels.
Prodigy: Makes math practice fun and engaging with an RPG-style adventure game. (Free with premium options available)
National Geographic Kids: Explore science, animals, and geography through interactive games, articles, and videos. (https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/)
Reading Eggs: Caters to younger learners with a variety of engaging activities for reading, phonics, and language arts. (Subscription required)
Embrace Real-World Learning:
Cooking in the Kitchen: Math and science come alive when you're measuring ingredients and following recipes. Let your child be your sous chef and explore fractions, conversions, and the science behind cooking.
History Comes Alive: Visit virtual museums like the Smithsonian or explore historical sites through 360° tours available online. Encourage research and discussions to solidify information.
Nature's Classroom: Take your learning outdoors! Identify plants and animals with apps like iNaturalist, track weather patterns with online weather tracking tools, or set up a backyard stargazing session with the help of virtual star charts.
Keep Reading Alive:
Summer Reading Challenge: Set a reading goal for the summer and create a reward system. Visit the library's website for themed reading lists or join a virtual book club for discussions and shared experiences.
Audiobooks on the Go: Make long car rides or downtime more enriching with audiobooks. Discuss the story, characters, and plot to enhance comprehension.
Read Aloud Together: Even older children benefit from shared reading experiences. Pick a book you can both enjoy and discuss themes, writing styles, and vocabulary.
