Texas EFAs 2026: A Parent’s Guide to Education Freedom Accounts, Deadlines, and What to Do Next

If you’re a parent in Texas, you’ve probably been hearing about the new Education Freedom Accounts (EFAs) for 2026, sometimes referred to as school vouchers. These accounts are now becoming a real option for families for the 2026–2027 school year.

And if you’re thinking, “What does this actually mean for my child?” you are absolutely not alone.

Let’s walk through this together in a way that actually makes sense.

How Do Texas EFAs Work in 2026?

Education Freedom Accounts (EFAs) allow families to use state education funding for approved learning options outside of traditional public schools.

Depending on your situation, that may include:

  • Private school tuition.

  • Tutoring services.

  • Homeschool curriculum.

  • Online or alternative learning programs.

For many families, this opens doors. But it also means you’re making more decisions than ever before and that can feel like a lot.

Key Deadline You Need to Know

The application deadline for the 2026–2027 school year is:

👉 March 31, 2026

Applications are currently open.

This is not first-come, first-served, but I wouldn’t wait until the last minute either.

How Much Funding Is Available?

Funding varies depending on your child’s needs:

  • Around $10,000+ per student for private school.

  • Up to approximately $30,000 for students with qualifying disabilities.

  • Smaller amounts for homeschool-related expenses.

👉 Important: This may not cover full tuition especially in areas like Plano, Frisco, and Dallas so plan for possible out-of-pocket costs.

How to Apply for the Texas EFA Program

To apply:

  1. Visit the official Texas Comptroller website: https://comptroller.texas.gov

  2. Locate the Education Freedom Account (EFA) program page.

  3. Complete the application.

  4. Submit any required documentation.

    .

Be sure to apply before the March 31, 2026 deadline.

What Happens After You Apply?

Spring 2026

  • Applications are reviewed.

  • Families receive decisions.

Late Spring–Summer 2026

  • Confirm participation.

  • Choose providers.

  • Set up accounts.

Fall 2026

  • Funds become available.

  • Students begin using the program.

Who Runs the Program?

The program is overseen by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts👉 https://comptroller.texas.gov

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) continues to oversee public school standards like TEKS and STAAR👉 https://tea.texas.gov

The program is managed by The Odyssey Company works with the TEFA

Public schools are still operating as usual, the Odyssey program simply adds another option.

What’s Different About Private Schools?

This is where I always tell parents to slow down and really think.

Private schools that accept EFAs must meet certain requirements (like accreditation and testing). However, they are not held to the same accountability standards as public schools.

For families of students with special needs:

  • Funding may reach up to $30,000, but it is not guaranteed.

  • Private schools are not required to follow IDEA the same way public schools do.

Before choosing a school, ask:

  • How will my child’s progress be measured?

  • What supports are actually in place?

  • What happens if my child struggles?

What Should You Consider Before Applying?

This isn’t just a financial decision, it’s a fit decision.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this match how my child learns best?

  • Will my child feel supported or overwhelmed?

  • What will we realistically pay out of pocket?

  • How will I know if my child is progressing?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. There’s just the right fit for your child.
