5 Back-to-School Hacks for Stressed-Out Students (and Their Parents!)

ree

Back-to-school season always sneaks up on us, doesn’t it? One minute we’re enjoying lazy summer mornings and the next we’re knee-deep in supply lists, schedules, and “meet the teacher” nights. As both a mom and an educator, I know how overwhelming this time of year can feel. Between juggling carpools, remembering who needs what binder, and signing approximately one million forms, it can feel like chaos.

But here’s the good news: a little preparation and a few simple hacks can take the stress down several notches. These are tricks I share with my own tutoring families at Reach Your Peake, and they’ve been game-changers for parents and students alike.

🔵 1. Create a “Launch Pad” at Home

Picture this: it’s Monday morning, you’ve got coffee in hand, and everyone is calm because backpacks, shoes, and lunch boxes are already in one spot. No more tearing through the house like a detective on a scavenger hunt.

A “launch pad” can be as simple as a basket by the door, a small shelf, or a designated corner in the mudroom. The key is consistency—everything school-related lives there. At night, kids load up their launch pad with homework, instruments, and sports gear, so mornings are smoother.

Pro tip: Make it fun! Let your child decorate their space with stickers or a favorite color bin. Ownership makes them more likely to use it.

🔵 2. Set a Homework Power Hour

Homework battles are real (parents, I see you). Instead of dragging assignments out all evening, set aside a power hour. During this time, devices are away, distractions are minimized, and everyone is focused on the task at hand.

If your child has ADHD or struggles with attention, break this time into chunks—25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute stretch or snack break. This method is called the Pomodoro Technique, and it’s a lifesaver.

Example: A 6th grader I work with went from crying through two-hour homework marathons to breezing through assignments in one focused hour—with fewer arguments at home.

🔵 3. Keep Snacks Simple but Smart

Let’s be honest: hungry kids are cranky kids. And cranky kids don’t want to do homework. Having a stash of quick, healthy snacks can make the transition from school to homework so much smoother.

Some of my tutoring families swear by:

  • String cheese and grapes

  • Apple slices with peanut butter

  • Pretzels with hummus

  • Yogurt with granola

Even better? Let kids help prep their own after-school snack. It builds independence and gives them something to look forward to after a long day.

🔵 4. Use Checklists (Not Nagging!)

Kids often tune out when they hear the same reminder 100 times (we’ve all been there). Instead of nagging, give them a checklist. It works like magic.

Morning checklist: Brush teeth, pack water bottle, check backpack, grab lunchbox.

Afternoon checklist: Empty backpack, start homework, pack for tomorrow, charge Chromebook.

Put it on the fridge, laminate it, or stick it on their bedroom door. Let your child check things off—it builds responsibility and gives them that little dopamine hit of accomplishment.

Bonus tip: For younger students or students with special needs, add pictures next to the words. A toothbrush image for “brush teeth” or a backpack picture for “pack bag.” Visuals make the routine easier to follow.

🔵 5. Don’t Forget Fun

Amid the chaos of new schedules, it’s easy to forget that kids need time to just be kids. Fun is not an “extra”—it’s part of helping kids manage stress and stay motivated.

Plan one fun thing during the week, even if it’s small. A family movie night, a trip for ice cream, or even a game of Uno after dinner can give everyone something to look forward to.

One of my tutoring families has “Waffle Wednesday.” Every Wednesday, they make waffles for dinner. It sounds silly, but it’s a tradition the kids love—and it makes the week feel lighter.
